Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, is a chaotic blend of hyper-masculinity, generational trauma, and unrestrained violence that aims to shock but often ends up frustrating. Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Ranvijay, a tormented man whose unresolved daddy issues manifest in increasingly gory outbursts, the film delivers more spectacle than substance.

At its core, Animal is about a son's desperate yearning for his father’s approval. Ranvijay (Kapoor) grows up in the shadow of his emotionally unavailable father, Balbir (Anil Kapoor), a wealthy and stoic businessman. With a passive mother who enables dysfunction and a complete lack of accountability from law enforcement, Ranvijay spirals into a beast of rage and violence. Vijay’s transformation into an “animal” is treated as both tragic and aspirational, asking the audience to sympathize with his unchecked rage.
2. Misguided Gender Politics
The film tries to sidestep criticism of Vanga’s Kabir Singh by flipping certain tropes—Vijay doesn’t slap his wife, Geetanjali (Rashmika Mandanna), but she slaps him. However, this reversal feels hollow, as Geetanjali is still relegated to a submissive, self-debasing role. Her arc exists only to validate Vijay’s journey, perpetuating the same outdated gender dynamics.
3. Aimless Screenwriting
The narrative leans heavily on flashbacks but fails to justify their necessity. The opening scene, set in 2056, feels arbitrary and adds no depth to the story. Much of the screenplay is a collection of disjointed sequences that prioritize shock value over coherence.
4. Violence Without Purpose
While the action sequences are technically impressive, they lack emotional weight. The film revels in violence for its own sake, offering no commentary or stakes beyond surface-level shock. Vijay’s murderous rampages stem from his unresolved childhood trauma, but this feels like a lazy justification rather than a meaningful exploration of his psyche.
5. Contrived Emotional Beats
The father-son dynamic at the heart of the film lacks nuance. Balbir’s neglect and Vijay’s over-the-top reactions make it difficult to empathize with either character. Instead of delving into the complexities of generational trauma, the film opts for melodrama and half-baked platitudes.
Final Thoughts
Animal is an overindulgent, violent spectacle that confuses style for substance. While Ranbir Kapoor delivers a committed performance and the action sequences are slickly executed, the film’s shallow exploration of masculinity and misguided attempts at emotional resonance make it more exhausting than engaging.
