Review of "Vedaa": A High-Octane Drama That Packs a Punch Against Injustice
Vedaa is a gripping tale of resilience, empowerment, and the fight against caste oppression, brought to life by director Nikkhil Advani. The film masterfully combines a strong social message with action-packed sequences, making it a compelling watch.
The story follows Vedaa (Sharvari), a young Dalit girl from Barmer with dreams of becoming a boxer. Her aspirations, however, threaten the rigid caste-based norms upheld by the village pradhan, Jitin Pratap Singh (Abhishek Banerjee), and his ruthless brother, Suyog (Kshitij Chauhan). Despite their oppressive grip on the village, Vedaa remains undeterred.
The arrival of court-martialed Army Major Abhimanyu (John Abraham) marks a turning point in her life. With his mentorship, Vedaa hones her skills and finds the strength to fight back—not just in the ring, but also against the injustices plaguing her family and community. Together, they form an indomitable team, delivering a strong message about resilience and resistance.
Inspired by real-life stories, Vedaa fearlessly highlights caste-based discrimination and systemic violence. The screenplay by Aseem Arora evokes the nostalgic charm of 90s Hindi cinema, blending intense drama, raw action, and emotionally charged moments.
Performances:
John Abraham shines as the stoic and action-driven Abhimanyu. His silent demeanor is balanced by powerful stunt sequences that are among the film’s highlights. Sharvari, in her breakout role as Vedaa, delivers a raw and compelling performance. She effortlessly captures the determination of a young woman standing tall against adversity. Abhishek Banerjee is convincing as the menacing antagonist, skillfully embodying a character driven by regressive ideologies.
Strengths:
The film’s gritty tone, impactful action choreography, and evocative scenes leave a lasting impression. Songs like "Zaroorat Se Zyada" enhance the narrative, blending seamlessly with the mood. The second-half action sequences, in particular, are adrenaline-pumping and well-executed.
Weaknesses:
However, Vedaa falters in parts. The climax feels stretched and unnecessarily convoluted, while a couple of songs disrupt the film’s pacing. Some moments come across as formulaic and predictable, which detracts from the otherwise engaging narrative.
