Plot Overview:
Rathnam (Vishal), a volatile and troubled enforcer for MLA Panneer Selvam (Samuthirakani), operates under a distorted sense of justice, meting out punishment through sheer violence. Haunted by a tragic past, Rathnam struggles to control his aggressive instincts, as seen early in the film when he takes brutal vengeance against a predator who harms a young schoolgirl. Things take a complex turn with the arrival of Mallika (Priya Bhavani Shankar), a nurse who resembles Rathnam's mother. Rathnam’s protective instincts are reignited when Mallika becomes the target of thugs working for Beema Rayudu (Murali Sharma), a ruthless land baron from Andhra Pradesh.

Vishal is the heart and soul of the film. His portrayal of Rathnam, a character brimming with raw intensity and charisma, dominates the screen. He handles the action and emotional beats equally, though the latter feels more like an afterthought to justify the carnage. Priya Bhavani Shankar delivers a decent performance as Mallika, but her role is largely confined to expressing concern and admiration for Rathnam.
Murali Sharma is effective as the menacing Beema Rayudu, exuding danger with every appearance. Samuthirakani, as the scheming MLA, and Yogi Babu, providing comic relief, serve their roles adequately. Gautham Menon’s cameo earns unexpected applause, adding a surprise element.
Devi Sri Prasad’s music complements the masala tone of the film, with a mix of energetic numbers and emotional melodies. M. Sukumar’s cinematography brings the chaotic action sequences to life, employing fast cuts and liberal use of slow motion to emphasize the brutality.
Weaknesses:
The film’s plot is wafer-thin and riddled with logical inconsistencies. Mallika’s storyline, involving her parents' willingness to risk their lives over a piece of land, feels flimsy and unconvincing. Her character often seems to exist solely as a catalyst for Rathnam’s violent rampages.
Hari’s trademark fast-paced storytelling is evident, but even by his standards, the film feels bloated. Many action sequences, while visually engaging, start to feel repetitive, with only minor changes in settings and justifications. The family drama surrounding Mallika drags down the momentum, and the overall narrative could benefit from significant trimming.

Rathnam is not a film to watch for intricate storytelling or profound character development. It’s a visceral action-packed ride that revels in its larger-than-life hero and relentless pacing.
